Facial detox

From high sugar meals throughout the holiday season, everyone jumps to a diet detox. Whether its detox teas or juice cleanses, it is safe to say that we have been there! After a period of unhealthy eating, your skin tends to suffer, producing more oil, resulting in clogged pores and breakouts. A weeklong facial detox helps to remove dead skin cells and impurities, allowing your skin to be revitalized. An effective facial detox can be done in 5 simple steps.

Step 1. Cleansing Twice a Day

Regardless of your typical skincare routine, a facial detox requires AM and PM cleansing. When choosing a cleanser, you need to take into consideration your skin type. For oily skin types, I would suggest a water-based gel in the morning and evening like Laneige’s Multi Deep-Clean Cleanser. An oil cleanser in the morning and a foam cleanser in the evening would be more beneficial to dryer skin types to gently cleanse while hydrating.

Step 2. Steaming

Steaming your skin is imperative after cleansing to allow ingredients to penetrate your pores and extract impurities. It is best to steam your face for about 10 minutes. This facial spa from Amazon is extremely effective AND super affordable!

Step 3. Face Masks

Face masks with mud, clay or charcoal pull out toxins and impurities in the top layers of the skin and refine the appearance of pores. Body Shop’s Himalayan Charcoal Purifying Glow Face Mask refines and revives the skin with Moroccan lava clay, bamboo charcoal, green tea leaves and organic tea tree oil. After applying to the face, leave the mask on for 5-10 minutes and rinse off with warm water and a face cloth in circular motions, gently exfoliating the skin. Applying the mask every other day during the detox week will keep the skin purified.

Step 4. Hydrate & Protect

Serums work to hydrate the skin and allow active ingredients in other products to sink deeper into the skin, paving the way for better results. Serums are effective in both the morning and night. In the morning, serums should be followed with moisturizer and sunscreen. In the evening, serums should be followed by a night cream or sleeping mask (depending on your skin type). A great serum that is suitable for all skin types is Paula’s Choice – Power Berry Serum, a 95% natural product giving skin a healthy glow through a potent combination of antioxidant berries.

Step 5. Water & Diet

Drinking water is especially important during a skin detox and crucial to everyday life. Drinking water eliminates toxins in your body preventing disruption in your skin. Coffee and soft drinks not only pump your body with sugar and additives, but also trigger dehydration. Avoiding these drinks during a detox will allow your skin to rehydrate and clean your skin from the inside out. Diet also plays a huge role in your skin health. Dairy products, fried foods and added sugars cause clogged pores and dullness. Better options for skin health lie in fruits and vegetables like broccoli, watermelon and kale. These alkaline rich foods are full of calcium and magnesium, keeping the skin strong and glowing.

Adding detox steps into your day-to-day life will result in long-term skin benefits. Putting more effort into daily skincare and eating alkaline-rich foods will allow you to see results even after the detox is complete. By implementing these small changes into your routine, your skin will not need a detox that often!
